Get Involved

PLEASE SEE THE HOME PAGE OR THE 2022-2023 SEASON PAGE FOR INFORMATION ABOUT GETTING INVOLVED THIS YEAR. AUDITION AND SIGNUP PROCESSES HAVE BEEN CHANGED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

How do I audition?

All OTYC operas are cast through a unified audition process coordinated through Yale College Arts. This means we will hold one audition at the beginning of the fall semester, which will serve as your audition for all of the shows that season. At that audition, you’ll have a chance to indicate the shows in which you are interested.

Who casts each show?

The OTYC board selects a production team for each show, and all teams are present at the audition process.

What do I sing for my audition?

For your audition, please prepare a short song or aria in your language of choice. Memorization is strongly preferred. Please bring a paper copy of your sheet music – a student accompanist will be provided!

I’m an instrumentalist, how can I get involved?

If you’re interested in playing in a show, please contact our orchestra manager Francis Fedora (francis.fedora@yale.edu). Our orchestra openings are also listed in our emails – if you want to be added to the panlist, please contact our recruitment coordinator Sophie Dvorak at sophie.dvorak@yale.edu.

What if I don’t study music?

No problem! Most of our performers are not music majors. OTYC programs a wide range of shows in different styles. There are shows with major roles, supporting roles, and chorus/ensemble opportunities. While some of us have been singing seriously for years, many of us sang opera for the first time with OTYC.

I want to direct/conduct/design/stage manager/produce/etc. – whom do I contact?

We post all of our production team openings on the Yale College Arts “Opportunities” page.  If you’re interested in working on a show, please contact our managing director, Max Hammond (max.hammond@yale.edu).

I want to help pick next year’s shows! How can I get on the board?

Board elections happen every January for the following calendar year. To be eligible for the board, you must have participated in at least one OTYC show in some capacity, whether onstage or behind-the-scenes. An email will be sent out detailing the responsibilities of each board position. You’ll be able to indicate which positions you’re interested in, at which point you’ll come in for a short interview with the previous board – there will be snacks! Please email managing director Max Hammond (max.hammond@yale.edufor more information.
